This large caterpillar (and butterfly) is widely spread all over Europe.
It is found typically during early spring.

The caterpillar is very striking and distinctive. It feeds on willow wood and deciduous trees.
I have come across this specimen in a meadow close to a stream I was fishing.

It is a huge moth and the caterpillar can measure more than 10 centimeters.
