A scientific identification is only possible with far greater magnification and a very good investment in serious specialized literature. And of course the mere possession of the literature won't help without plenty of hours spent studying :). What degree of magnification are we talking about ? Consider the picture above, assuming your screen is 24 inches, the image is about ten times bigger than the real insect. The absence of anal gills, the body characteristics, the peculiar color and marking signs, the location and altitude identify it as a Perla marginata, a stonefly larva. This degree of magnification is achievable with a 1:1 macro lens. Additional extension tubes or bellows will boost the magnification and expand the range of identifiable species of a great number.
