Although in fly anglers' common jargon the drift is more something linked to pre-hatching, the flow of the current continuously transports particles and organisms. It is one of the main dispersal mechanisms utilized by the inhabitants of the river. With it, algae, eggs and small invertebrates spread and colonize new environments. The drift is happening even when no surface activity is on going.
