The classification based on form and colors is usually enough even for the ambitious flyfisherman.. Olive dun, black gnat, iron spinner, they all identify groups of different species in their specific stadium of larvae or adult by leveraging on the macroscopic aspect. The mayfly in the picture would fall under the denomination of late march brown if found in late spring. This definition will suite any fly angler requirement. Yet, it is not defining the exact species. Whether this is needed for the sake of better fishing might be arguable, but the desire for knowledge is one of the strongest drivers of the human species.
